Keto Saved Me
I was always fat, my whole life that I remember. I can remember my Mom, the fitness queen, she tried everything she knew to help me lose weight! Everything! Problem was, it was all mainstream low fat, high carb crap that just doesn’t work; I just got fatter! As you can imagine, the life of an obese child is hard enough, but a teenager? Yeah it was pretty horrible. I played sports, I moved more and tried to eat less and I was fairly athletic. But of course, when you’re young and vulnerable dealing with that, FOOD becomes your friend, your confidant, your coping mechanism. By the time I was in high school I was over 300 pounds.
I reached 340 at my heaviest, and that’s when my health really began to deteriorate. Found out I was Diabetic and was already suffering a myriad of other health issues; Hypertension, Acid Reflux, and IBS. This was a wakeup call, so I tried like Hell to try and fix it, of course nothing worked. Why would it? I was insulin resistant and was continuing to poison myself with a high carb diet. How did I know? I didn’t. Then at the age of 28 I had an MI, a Myocardial Infarction, more commonly known as a HEART ATTACK!
Wakeup call #2! Well of course, I did what any other individual in America would do, I followed another Doctor prescribed diet in addition to the one I already had from the diabetes educator. That worked for a time I saw a bit of fat loss, however my health decline continued. I was now in my 30’s was a full blown Type 2 Diabetic, Hypertensive, Acid Reflux, IBS, IBD, now had Sleep Apnea. Fought debilitating fatigue every single day and just genuinely felt miserable.
Could it get worse? Why would you ask? Why? Of course it can. I then suffered a major back injury. I ruptured both L4 and L5 vertebrae. It was so severe when it happened that they admitted me in the hospital for 4 days awaiting a Neurosurgeon that could operate on me. After having a Laminectomy and Double Discectomy, it took me over a year to recover and get back to somewhat “normal”, if you can call it that. Throughout this time, my conditions worsened, my Diabetes was becoming more severe; affecting everything. This was a lot of the reason the healing took so long from the back surgery. The neuropathy was progressing to unbearable levels and the eye sight was beginning to weaken.
So even though I stopped asking if it could get worse; it DID! In literally 6 months after finally recovering from the back surgery, I suffered a reoccurrence of L4 and L5 vertebrae rupturing again. Underwent surgery again, and again took over a year to recover. By now I am a mess. The doctors told me I healed like a 60 or 70 year old man. My body had been plagued by the elevated blood sugars for so long and it wasn’t getting any better.
So, fast forward to 2014. I am now Fat, Sick and dying! 319 pounds, size 52, hypertensive, reflux, IBS, IBD, sleep apnea, suffered a heart attack, diabetic, chronic fatigue, debilitating neuropathy, excruciating back pain, barley able to endure any level of activity and newly developed kidney disease. I was shooting 70 units of 70/30 insulin 3xday. I really didn’t know how much more I could take, or how I even survived to that point.
I was following my doctor prescribed American Diabetes Association diet. Don’t eat sugar but make sure you eat good healthy complex carbs. Oh, okay Doc. So one day at my physician’s office. And he says, “Well, there’s protein in your urine.” “Yeah ok, so what’s that mean?” I say. “Well you have kidney disease, and the only way to reverse it is to cure your diabetes.” “Ok, well I thought that’s what we were doing? That’s why I’ve been following your diet. That’s why I’ve been shooting myself with insulin three times a day.”
I was confused I didn’t know what to do so I decided to take matters in my own hands. A friend of mine’s brother was on a popular weight-loss TV program. So I followed their meal plan, you know five 300 calorie meals a day. I did it, I lost some weight it was going well. I thought, “Hey this is it!” So back to the doctor and he says “well you know your diabetes isn’t getting any better and are your kidney disease is getting worse.” I said, “What do I do now?” He said, “I don’t know what to do but the next step is dialysis.” FINAL WAKEUP CALL!
I was floored, I was blown away, I thought to myself I’m only 37 years old, how can I need dialysis? I didn’t know what to do, I only knew know that I didn’t want to die! So I went home and I researched and researched and I read and read. Book after book. Websites and articles. And that when I realized, I need Keto. I need Keto in my life. So I did it. I committed 100%. I followed the meal plan, I tested my glucose levels after everything I put in my body and I figured it out and I mastered it. And within about 3 months I was basically off most of my insulin! I know it’s amazing!
But it was Keto, Keto saved me! So after years of agony, suffering and misery, all I need was a Ketogenic Diet. Within 6 months my sleep apnea was gone, no more IBS, no more IBD, no more acid reflux, no more insulin. It was amazing I felt better than I’ve ever felt and I had lost 50 pounds. Within a year I had lost almost 100 pounds, my A1c, Triglycerides and urine proteins had significantly improved.
So as of today, I have lost over 120 pounds. My triglycerides went from 196 to 35, A1c is 5.6, down from 8.3 whilst still shooting insulin. My kidney disease is in complete remission. I’m still fighting the battle of elevated blood glucose from my diabetes, insulin resistance and a fatty liver and pancreas. In addition my autoimmunity seems to now be attacking my beta cells and I may be slowly developing T1.5 diabetes. Until some further testing we won’t know for sure. Parr for the course, I guess. I’m really trying to avoid using exogenous insulin, although I have had to some. I remain resilient however and true to my mission. Healing my body will take time, it may never completely happen. But my mission will not change; I will endeavor to save as many other lives as possible. There is an answer, there is a cure and it’s not at the pharmacy, it’s at the grocery store. It’s a ketogenic diet, it’s food, food is the medicine!
Our planet is at epidemic levels when it comes to obesity, diabetes, heart disease and everything else that comes along with chronic carbohydrate abuse and Keto can save those people from certain DEATH! All we need is to Keto.
So remember we are all individual as such our journey!
